One of Vener's friends lives in Ekaterinburg. His name is Sergei, and he's a Lieutenant in the Russian militia -like the national police, I guess. He teaches, and the blonde woman is his wife, Sveeta. And the baby...that's their little boy. The woman in the blue and white dress is Sergei's mother, who drove up with us from Sterlitamak, unbeknownst to Sergei. A little surprise!

And now I'm in the picture - but I'm wearing a coat that was supposedly made for Boris Yeltsin, a gift to him from his guards. The story goes, some guy that Sergei works with got it as a gift from Boris, since he is his relative. Sergei got it from the guy in exchange for something...a little horse trading, apparently a common practice in Russia.

We went and checked out Serge's work, the Police Academy. Here, too, I was asked not to speak any English when anyone else was around. Here we are in a little museum of police artifacts, outside a class room.

It turns out that the Ural mountains are kind of considered to be the border line between Europe and Asia. So here is the actual line where they think the border is, and we are standning over it.
