Well, the 2005 California Public School Rankings are in!  There’s an article you can read about this in the Santa Cruz Sentinel:

http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2006/May/17/local/stories/08local.htm

Read the article if you like, but at the bottom you will find a link to the rankings for Santa Cruz county schools:

I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again:  buy in a good school district!  Even if you don’t have kids, it’s important to buy in a good school district, because when it comes time to sell your house, the homes in the good school districts sell faster and for more money than the ones that are in more poorly-rated school districts.

The aforementioned Santa Cruz Sentinel article poo-poos the whole school ranking system, and I’m sure the criticism of the ranking system is well justified.  Even so, it’s a fact (but don’t ask for sources!) that people really want their kids to go to highly-ranked schools, and  that’s going to have a positive effect on the valuation of properties in those districts.
