Holiday Celebrations at the Filoli Estate in Woodside

Tucked away near the picturesque town of Woodside, California, the Filoli Historic House and Garden transforms into a winter wonderland during the holiday season, offering a series of enchanting events that captivate visitors of all ages. From its storied past to its present-day festivities, Filoli stands as a beacon of holiday cheer and historical grandeur.

A Glimpse into Filoli’s Rich History

Constructed in 1917 by William Bowers Bourn II and his wife, Agnes, Filoli was envisioned as a serene country retreat away from the hustle and bustle of San Francisco. The estate’s unique name is derived from the first two letters of Bourn’s personal credo: “Fight for a just cause; Love your fellow man; Live a good life.”

The Bourns meticulously designed the 654-acre estate to be self-sustaining, featuring agricultural fields, livestock, and orchards. William Bourn considered himself a gentleman farmer and took great pleasure in the seven acres of fruit trees in his Gentleman’s Orchard. The estate’s grandeur was further enhanced by its 43-room Georgian-style mansion, adorned with intricate moldings, marble fireplaces, and parquet floors.

In 1937, following the deaths of the Bourns, the estate was purchased by William P. Roth and his wife, Lurline Matson Roth. The Roth family continued the tradition of elegance and hospitality, hosting numerous social events and maintaining the estate’s splendor until it was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1975.
