The Good News for Santa Cruz – February 3, 2026

One thing that keeps people stuck in their homes, especially people who have lived in them for decades, is that the process of selling and moving is so complicated. Which is why I’ve come up with a strategy that takes the weight off your shoulders while making sure you don’t leave a cent of your equity on the table.

Being a REALTOR® here in Silicon Valley, I see a lot of people who have owned their homes for thirty or forty years and feel a bit overwhelmed because they haven’t sold property in ages. You need more than just a “For Sale” sign; you need a plan to maximize your actual cash-out at closing. My strategy isn’t about expensive kitchen remodels, which are usually a total waste of money, but about targeting the “low-hanging fruit” that makes buyers fall in love. We focus on things like light, space, and functionality to remove any reason for a buyer to feel doubt.

The truth is, glossy photos and social media posts are just the bare minimum. The real magic happens when we combine strategic pricing with a high-impact launch during those first ten days on the market. We want to concentrate demand like a laser to create the kind of urgency that puts you in the driver’s seat. When we have that leverage, I use my 20-plus years of experience to negotiate the best possible terms, protecting your bottom line from start to finish. It’s about making the process feel smooth for your family while walking away with the highest possible number to fund your next chapter.

If you’ve been thinking about what’s next but the logistics feel like a mountain you’re not ready to climb, let’s chat.

Curly Lambeau’s Resignation Ripples to Monterey (February 1, 1950)

News of Curly Lambeau’s resignation as head coach of the Green Bay Packers reached Monterey, where it became a popular topic of conversation in local bars and newspapers. Lambeau, a legendary figure in professional football, had shaped the Packers into a national powerhouse. His departure marked the end of an era in the sport, and even far from Wisconsin, fans closely followed the story, reflecting how major sports news resonated in small coastal communities long before the age of nonstop television coverage.

Monterey Prints Its Final “Sardine Edition” (February 4, 1949)

The Monterey Peninsula Herald published its final “Annual Sardine Edition,” a symbolic marker of Monterey’s fading identity as the “sardine capital of the world.” Once a celebration of booming catches and Cannery Row prosperity, the special edition ended as sardine populations plunged and the industry’s economic engine faltered. The paper’s decision reflected a stark new reality: the boom years were over. For many residents, the final edition underscored a painful transition as Monterey began rethinking its waterfront’s future beyond sardines.

Salinas Council Lays Groundwork for Oldtown Revitalization (February 4, 1974)

The Salinas City Council held a preliminary session to discuss a $1 million investment plan aimed at revitalizing the city’s deteriorating downtown core. The proposal sought to reverse declining business activity and counter competition from suburban shopping centers. Early discussions focused on economic renewal, infrastructure improvements, and reshaping downtown’s image. This meeting marked an important first step toward what would later become the “Oldtown” development, setting the stage for long-term redevelopment efforts and reshaping Salinas’s historic city center.

Save the Sound: Santa Cruz Pushes Back on Catalyst Club Housing Plan

A proposed housing development at the site of Santa Cruz’s longtime music venue, the Catalyst Club, has sparked strong backlash from residents, artists, and local business owners. The plan would replace the iconic downtown venue with a multi-story mixed-use project featuring housing units and ground-floor commercial space. Many community members argue that the Catalyst is a cultural landmark that has played a central role in Santa Cruz’s music scene for decades, hosting nationally known acts and supporting local performers. Critics worry its demolition would erase an important piece of the city’s identity.

Opponents also raised concerns about compatibility between housing and live music, questioning whether a relocated or rebuilt venue beneath residences could survive noise complaints. Others expressed frustration over the continued loss of cultural spaces in favor of market-rate housing. While supporters of the project cite the need for more housing downtown, residents are urging city leaders to explore preservation options, including landmark status, to protect the Catalyst’s legacy while addressing housing needs.
