After decades of owning a home in Silicon Valley, deciding what comes next can feel surprisingly complicated. You may have substantial equity, a home filled with memories, and more options than ever before, but that doesn’t necessarily make the decision to stay, sell, downsize, or relocate any easier.
For many longtime homeowners, the problem isn’t a lack of choices. It’s uncertainty about which choice makes the most sense. How much is the home really worth? What would you actually walk away with after taxes and selling costs? Should you renovate before selling or leave the home largely as-is? Where would you go next? And how do you coordinate everything without turning the process into an overwhelming project?
That uncertainty can sometimes keep people stuck for years. And while there is nothing wrong with staying in a home that still works for you, waiting until a health issue, family situation, or other unexpected event forces a decision can dramatically reduce your options. The same is true of rushing into a sale or accepting an investor offer simply because it seems like the easiest way out.
That’s why I created what I call the Best Move Method, a step-by-step approach designed to replace uncertainty with a clear plan. It starts by understanding your real options and the numbers behind them, then looks at preparation, positioning, timing, and the practical details involved in getting from where you are today to where you want to be next.
The goal isn’t automatically to sell your home. It’s to understand how the equity you’ve spent decades building can best support your financial goals, lifestyle, family, and future. Sometimes that means selling now. Sometimes it means staying longer. What matters is making that choice intentionally rather than having circumstances make it for you.
If you’re beginning to wonder whether your longtime Silicon Valley home still fits the life you want for the next 10 or 20 years, you don’t need to have all the answers before reaching out. A conversation about your options can be the first step toward figuring out what your own best move might look like.

Historic San Jose Home Could Make Way for New Housing
A San Jose property with ties to the city’s history could be redeveloped to make room for new housing, highlighting the ongoing tension between preserving older homes and addressing Silicon Valley’s housing shortage. The proposal would bring residential development to a site currently occupied by a longtime home, as developers look for opportunities to add housing within established neighborhoods.
The project comes as San Jose continues working toward ambitious state-mandated housing goals and encouraging development in areas where land is increasingly scarce. Supporters of redevelopment argue that adding homes on underused properties can help increase supply in one of the nation’s most expensive housing markets.
At the same time, the property’s history raises questions about preservation and how the city should balance its architectural and cultural heritage with the need for growth. The proposal reflects a broader challenge facing San Jose as development pressure reaches older properties and neighborhoods.
