Downsizing is often seen as giving something up: a bigger home, familiar surroundings, or belongings accumulated over decades. But for many longtime homeowners, a better way to think about it is rightsizing: choosing a home and lifestyle that better support the way you want to live now.
That distinction becomes especially important later in life. Research suggests that people tend to have better experiences with a move when they feel in control of the decision rather than being pushed into it by a fall, health change, loss of a spouse, or other crisis. Planning while you’re still healthy and independent allows you to think carefully about what you want instead of simply reacting to circumstances.
For longtime Silicon Valley homeowners, the financial side can be just as significant. After 20, 30, or 40 years of ownership, there may be $1 million, $2 million, or more in home equity sitting inside a property that has become too large, expensive, or difficult to maintain. That equity could potentially provide greater financial flexibility, support retirement goals, or make it possible to choose a living situation that offers more convenience, connection, and support.
And the options extend far beyond simply moving into a smaller house. Some homeowners choose a single-level property nearby, while others move closer to their children, consider a 55-plus community, or explore senior living. Eligible California homeowners may also be able to use Proposition 19 to transfer their existing property tax base when purchasing another home.
The real question isn’t simply, “Should I downsize?” It’s “Does my current home still support the life I want for the years ahead?” If the answer isn’t clear yet, that’s okay. In fact, “I’m not ready yet” may be one of the best times to start exploring your options, while you still have the time, flexibility, and freedom to decide on your own terms.

Stoneridge Shopping Center Opens in Pleasanton (September 4, 1980)
Stoneridge Shopping Center opened in Pleasanton, giving the growing Tri-Valley area a major new retail destination. Located near the Interstate 580 and 680 interchange, the mall brought large department stores, specialty shops, restaurants, and other businesses together under one roof. Its opening reflected Pleasanton’s rapid suburban growth and helped establish the surrounding area as an important shopping and commercial center for residents throughout eastern Alameda County.

Santa Clara County Home Care Workers Win $2 Hourly Raise
More than 36,000 In-Home Supportive Services caregivers in Santa Clara County will receive higher wages under a new two-year contract approved by the Board of Supervisors. The agreement provides a $2-per-hour increase over the next year, bringing wages to $22.44 an hour by July 2027.
The deal follows negotiations with SEIU Local 2015 and comes as many caregivers struggle with Silicon Valley’s high cost of living. A union survey found nearly 62% have difficulty covering housing costs, 53% rely on food assistance or food pantries, and 78% work multiple jobs.
The contract also caps enrollment in the county’s Valley Health Plan at 15,800 workers and increases monthly premiums. While advocates welcomed the wage increase, some say higher pay, better training and broader health coverage are still needed to strengthen the caregiving workforce that supports older adults and residents with disabilities.
