The Birth of Roaring Camp: How It All Began

Before its development in 1963, the land now known as Roaring Camp was part of the Big Trees Ranch, a property rich in history and natural beauty. In 1867, San Francisco businessman Joseph Warren Welch purchased 350 acres of old-growth redwood forest, including this land, to protect the majestic trees from the rampant logging in the region. He established Welch’s Big Trees Resort, a private forest preserve that became a popular destination for tourists seeking to experience the awe-inspiring redwoods. The area remained under the stewardship of the Welch family until 1930, when a significant portion was sold to Santa Cruz County, eventually becoming part of the Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. The specific 170 acres that would later become Roaring Camp remained relatively undeveloped, preserving its natural state, until F. Norman Clark leased the land in 1959. Clark’s vision led to the creation of Roaring Camp, a heritage railroad and recreation of an 1880s logging town, which officially opened to the public in 1963. 

Contrary to tourist lore, Roaring Camp was not originally established as a logging camp. In the 1830s, mountain man Isaac Graham settled in the area, and his lively settlement was dubbed “Roaring Camp” by Mexican authorities. Graham did establish the first sawmill west of the Mississippi in 1842, but the specific site known today as Roaring Camp was not a logging camp.

Roaring Camp Ownership Today

Today, Roaring Camp Railroads is a privately held company. The Clark family has maintained ownership and management since its founding in 1958 by F. Norman Clark. After his passing in 1985, his wife, Georgiana Clark, assumed leadership responsibilities. Currently, their daughter, Melani Clark, serves as the President and CEO of Roaring Camp Railroads. The company’s Board of Directors includes family members and other individuals, with Frederick Bear, Catherine Thorsen, Melani Clark, Bodey Denault, John B. DeNault III, and Michael Sarka serving as directors. John DeNault III holds the position of Treasurer, and Rosemary Sarka is the Secretary. Roaring Camp, Inc. does not offer its stock for public purchase; however, it may repurchase stock from existing shareholders under certain circumstances.

The Historic Trains of Roaring Camp

Roaring Camp operates a collection of historic steam locomotives, primarily acquired from various industrial operations across the United States. The flagship locomotive, Dixiana (#1), is a Class B Shay engine built in 1912 by the Lima Locomotive Works. It was originally used by the Alaculsy Lumber Company in Tennessee and later served multiple owners before being purchased by Roaring Camp’s founder, F. Norman Clark, in 1958. After restoration, Dixiana began service at Roaring Camp in 1963. 

Another notable locomotive is Tuolumne (#2), a Heisler engine built in 1899 for the West Side Flume and Lumber Company near Tuolumne City, California. Roaring Camp acquired this locomotive in 1963, and it has since been restored and remains operational. 

The maintenance of these historic locomotives is managed by Roaring Camp’s dedicated team of in-house mechanics and engineers, who specialize in the preservation and operation of vintage steam engines. Their expertise ensures that the locomotives remain in excellent working condition for regular passenger service.

Roaring Camp Rail Line to Santa Cruz

Maintenance responsibilities of the track connecting Roaring Camp to Santa Cruz, known as the Santa Cruz Branch Rail Line have long been a subject of discussion and debate. Historically, Roaring Camp operated tourist trains along this route to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. However, due to disputes over maintenance costs and track conditions, the future operations on this line have faced challenges. As of recent reports, the line requires significant repairs, and its maintenance involves coordination between Roaring Camp and local authorities, including the Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission.
