At Home in Happy Valley

Happy Valley, formerly recognized as Blackburn Gulch, is a charming residential area located at the end of Branciforte Drive. The drive, in turn, extends from Market Street, a bustling hub in Santa Cruz. Do not confuse Branciforte Drive with Branciforte Avenue; the two do not intersect. Happy Valley Road, another significant path, branches from Branciforte Drive following the course of Crystal Creek.

Historical Background

Before acquiring the moniker ‘Blackburn Gulch’, the area was colloquially known as Squabble Hallow, a name that possibly originated from border disputes prevalent in the region. A turning point in its history was the establishment of the Happy Valley Resort around 1930, post which the locale began to be identified as Happy Valley.

“History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.” – Maya Angelou
